Improviso

2025
“Ir atrás do amor é um jazz.” — “Chasing love is like jazz.” The lyric from “Um Brinde” sets the tone: Djavan built his new album, Improviso, around unplanned movements, the unpredictable dance, and the unrehearsed plays that shape the dynamics of love.

Across 12 original tracks—11 of them brand-new, most written recently—the artist continues his craft of carving new paths through the vast forest of love, note by note, as if defending, in each score, the idea of life as a constant state of motion—for stagnant affections tend to dry out.

Writing about love is never repetition. And Djavan delights in finding new ways to navigate the same ocean of ever-changing waters.

Improviso features the loyal musicians who have shaped Djavan’s sound for decades: Torcuato Mariano on guitars and Marcelo Mariano on bass; Paulo Calasans and Renato Fonseca on piano and keyboards; Felipe Alves on drums; and Marcos Suzano adding percussion on select tracks. “Cetim” features his longtime collaborators João Viana (drums) and Max Viana (guitar), while João Castilho plays guitar on “Um Brinde.” “Pra Sempre,” “Falta Ralar!,” “O Grande Bem,” and “Um Brinde” feature Jessé Sadoc (trumpet and flugelhorn), Marcelo Martins (tenor sax), and Rafael Rocha (trombone).

Produced, arranged, and artistically directed by Djavan himself, Improviso marks his first release mixed in Dolby Atmos and also arrives on vinyl.

“Before I ever started writing, I was already using my voice as an instrument — improvising. Throughout my life, I’ve treated improvisation as a form of melodic reflection. It’s a kind of flight, guided by the harmonic foundation that defines its airspace.

Within it lie both the freedom of creation and the danger of those ‘Soviet notes’ that harmony refuses to accept. In this game, the sky and the ground are always close together, making improvisation a constant challenge.”
